Spring is coming; are you ready?

It's hard to believe that Spring is just around the corner.  The sunshine is always a welcome site in the Northwest, especially after months of cloud cover and rain.  With the coming of Spring, preparation for the volatile temperatures is also necessary.

January and February are often ideal months to trim your fruit trees and rose bushes during their dormant stage.  In Oregon and SW Washington, we typically get a week of sunny temperatures (sometimes climbing into the 70's), but then often followed by a serious drop in temperatures (sometimes in the 30's) and even occasional snow.  This can reek havoc on your landscaping, especially those bulbs and plants that blossom in the early months.

Be sure and tackle those outdoor ground projects right away, and consult a landscaper or tree trimmer if you have questions regarding your specific plants, shrubs, bushes and trees.  You may also find the HGTV articles on early spring landscaping helpful and fun!

The Chinese drywall issues continue to be investigated...

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is continuing to investigate metal corrosion problems in homes where drywall from China was installed between 2001 and 2009.  If you notice any unusual sulfur smells in your home or notice appliances with copper wiring that stop working and become corroded, be sure and investigate further to see if the drywall could be the issue.  So far seven complaints have been received from Washington, but none from Oregon.  It is possible our climate has protected us from some of the issues those in Florida and Louisiana have faced.  Visit the CPSC website to learn more.

Don't forget your Valentine!

It's hard to believe that in just two short weeks, it will be Valentines Day.  If you have a special someone in your life, don't forget to tell them how special they are with a card, gift or just time with you.  If you don't have a special someone close to you, consider doing something for a friend or loved one that has lost their Valentine this year.

We greatly appreciate your referrals!

Storm Damage Repair Scams

The devastating earthquake in Haiti and the high winds and snow throughout the U.S., it's a reminder that not only are our homes and businesses susceptible to major damage, but we're also potentially vulnerable to scams.  The Oregon CCB issued a news brief to our coastal region after major wind storms last fall reminding residents to watch our for scams.

Hiring licensed contractors with proven performance reduces the risk significantly for fraud and deceptive practices.  You can also file a claim with the CCB or the WA LNI if you feel you have been scammed.
