Are you ready for potential snow?

Last years beautiful winter wonderland in the Portland/Vancouver area was a big surprise to most of us and unfortunately left a lot of damage behind to residences and businesses.  If we receive the same winter weather front this year, are you prepared?

We had several reports of homeowners losing their gutters and carports crashing down on cars due to the weight of the snow.  We also know several people lost limbs from trees and bushes.  Although snow is wonderful to look at and a playground for kids (and adults), it can reek havoc on your personal and business property.

When you notice a large collection of snow on any flat surfaces, landscaping or light weight fixtures, be sure and remove that snow or have others remove it as soon as possible.  Be prepared with snow removal equipment such as shovels and blowers - or have phone numbers handy you can call if you need help.  Also prepare your home with safe alternatives for light and heat as well as non-perishable foods in the event you cannot drive to the stores due to icy roads or you lose power.  If you are comfortable driving in the snow with chains or snow tires, now is the time to plan for those purchases before the snow arrives.

Although it's impossible to know what our winter will hold this year, prevention is far less costly and stressful than resolving the problems after the fact!

Painting Problems?

Have you ever painting your home only to have it later bubble, chip or paint in a short amount of time?  Recently we ran across a fact sheet by the USDA Forest Service on Why House Paint Fails.  Although the article is from 1995 and paint quality and techniques have improved, there is definitely some good points in this article to consider before you paint.

Here's an interesting quote that was in our NARI newsletter:

Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare.  They are consumed in twelve minutes.  Half-times take twelve minutes.  This is not coincidence.

Recently a construction crew hit a gas line in Oregon City and several businesses had to be evacuated for several hours.  Thankfully the damage was not as bad as originally feared, but it was a reminder that locates should always be called at 811 before you dig.  Also, if you smell that rotten egg smell around your home or business, call 911 for emergency crews to respond.

Great job by the Clackamas County Fire District #1 in responding to the scene and taking precautions to keep our community safe!
