ECONOMY REMODEL

In 2009, Matthew Watkins said, he had no choice but to downsize his already small construction business, Mosaic Remodel and Construction. He and his business partner moved out of their office, transformed their homes into work spaces, laid off their two staff members and stored their tools in garages and sheds. Now, Watkins said, people are beginning to renovate their homes again. But, as he waits patiently for his business to get rolling, he doubts it will ever return to the lucrative pursuit it once was.
“In the height of the market, we stayed busy,” he said. “A lot of people were flipping houses. They would buy a house, call us to come in and renovate it and then turn around and sell it as fast as we could finish the job.”When the housing bubble burst, so did Watkins’s business plan. “In the beginning of 2009, it was almost like falling off a cliff. Everything was doing well, then there were two months without a single phone call,” Watkins said.Read Full Article

Steven Pinder had his work cut out for him when he and his wife moved into a 90-year-old multifamily house the summer of last year.He planned to turn it from four apartments into a single-family home. That meant a complete overhaul, from plumbing to flooring. The couple knew the cost would be steep — rivaling what they paid for the home — but arranged suitable financing. They got an FHA mortgage with a down payment just 3.8% of the purchase price. They tapped a home equity line on their first home to cover some renovation costs, and paid the rest in cash.Read Full Article

Remodel for Comfort, Not for Show

Economic recessions come and go. The current one—purportedly over since 2009—is the fourth in the 34-year career of Duo Dickinson, an architect in Madison, Conn. But this time around, he notices a different attitude among homeowners toward remodeling their homes. Before, the top concern was how a remodeling project would affect a home’s resale value, Dickinson points out. But today, people aren’t thinking first about resale value. Their prime motive in remodeling is to make the home more livable.”We’re back to the way people thought about their homes before the aftermath of World War II, when they began to see their homes as profit engines, rather than places to commit to,” says Dickinson, author of “Staying Put: Remodel Your House to Get the Home You Want.”Read Full Article
